THE EMORY PROTON THERAPY CENTER
IN ATLANTA, GA
The Emory Proton Therapy Center ("EPTC") opened in December of 2018, and is one of a handful of such centers in the United States. In 1961 collaboration between the Harvard Cyclotron Laboratory and the Massachusetts General Hospital resulted in the creation on proton beam therapy.

How Proton Therapy Works
Proton therapy is a form of external beam radiation treatment that delivers radiation with proton particles rather than with X-rays. Compared to and X-ray beam, a proton therapy beam can better concentrate radiation in the intended target, reducing or eliminating radiation damage to surrounding normal healthy tissues. By avoiding radiation exposure to normal tissues, proton therapy can reduce short-term side effects as well as potential long-term side effects that can occur months of years after radiation. The EPTC provides the most advanced radiation treatment with the expertise of renowned specialists at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.
